Casa Pedro Romero

    The details

    Casa Pedro Romero is a hotel that's a piece of living history; somewhere to truly engage in the Getsemani communite, appreciate its spirit of independence, while enjoying an independent stay of your own.

    The boutique, 4-roomed Casa Pedro Romero, can be found in a prime position, half a block from the heart and soul of Getsemani; Plaza Trinidad. On your doorstep you will be greeted by real neighbours; one renting bicycles for COP$3,000 (US$1.60) an hour to Cartagena-teens and the occasional tourist, another selling homemade sweets and another setting up the chessboard for another evening of hotly contested games.

    The hotel was named, at the insistence of these neighbours, after local hero Pedro Romero, and just like its namesake, this house and its family has played a pivotal role in shaping Getsemani, now a thriving international hotspot.

    After discovering this fascinating history for yourselves (and exploring all the other sights of Cartagena), you'll relish returning to the sanctuary of Casa Pedro Romero to relax and reflect.

    With just four high-ceilinged, tastefully decorated rooms, each with their own private bathroom and air-conditioning, this rightfully feels more like your own home, than a hotel. Use your own set of keys to come and go as you please, prepare a snack of your choosing in the kitchen, or make a wish in the historic well - this is the perfect roost for those who, just like Pedro, Salsa to the beat of their own drum.

    The exceptionally friendly staff are likely to be invisible unless you need them, whilst either proud Getsemani-sense owners Sandra or her Spanish husband Javier will be on-hand to warmly provide their local insights and answer any questions.

    For a stay that is as unique and independent as you are, opt for Casa Pedro Romero and enjoy your place in history.

    THIS IS WHAT WE LOVE
    * Sharing in the stories of transformation of Getsemani from troubled Barrio to international hotspot from proud local owners Sandra and Javier and learning about the hotel's namesake, Getsemani hero Pedro Romero
    * The independence! Your own keys to come and go as you please, a kitchen to prepare your own food (although a prepared breakfast is included) and the feeling that you have this historic house all to yourself!
    * Free Wi-Fi
    * Great value
    * Close proximity to the bars and restaurants of Getsemani, including great coffee and juice at Ceiba Juice Bar and kickass cocktails at Malagana Café & Bar
    * Cheap street eats and a cold beer on the Plaza de la Santisima Trinidad

    WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
    * With just 4 bedrooms, the hotel is very small. When fully-occupied the communal vibe is great but bear in mind you will be sharing space outside your private rooms
    * Getsemani is not Bocagrande or Centro. There are real people living there. Some of them look a little moody but they're not! Use common sense and it is as safe (or safer) as anywhere in the world
    * Casa Pedro Romero is still fairly new and the owners are working hard to make it amazing
