Cartagena for the LGBT travel community - Your essential guide to gay travel in Cartagena

LGBT Travel in CartagenaCartagena for the LGBT travel community

Colombia has flung open its doors to tourism, and fortunately it has also widened its mindset. Whilst Catholicism is still very much encrypted in the country’s DNA, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) rights movement has been successful in puncturing conservative legislation, with same sex marriage being legalized in Colombia in 2016, making it the fourth Latin American country to have done so.

So on a ground level, what does this mean for gay/queer travellers looking to discover one of the world’s hottest new destinations?

Well, quite a lot actually. Although Cartagena will never rival the rainbow ranks of cities such as San Francisco or Berlin, don’t allow Cartagena’s petite size fool you into believing its small-minded too. After all, love is love, and no other country is a sucker for amor quite like Colombia.

The LGBT scene may be small, but it’s mighty—and more importantly growing, with events such as Gay Pride rallying up more support and interest every year.

Restaurants, shops, bars and clubs, well aware of the power of the Pink Dollar, are actively doing much more to educate staff on the diversity of the tourism industry, so visitors really feel they can relax and be themselves pretty much anywhere in the city’s hotspots.

Dating apps such as Grindr, thrive here, and are a great gateway to the underground queer scene gently bubbling beneath the surface.

This tailor made guide has been designed to help same sex travellers to do their homework when it comes to visiting Cartagena, a relatively new travel destination on the international gay radar.
